Lukhovitsy lies in the south-east of Moscow Oblast, near the Oka River, one of central Russia's main waterways. The river winds broadly across its floodplain south of town, with meadows, oxbow lakes and old channels on either side. On the map, this loose, curving landscape contrasts with the straighter lines of the town, the railway and the roads.
The town grew along the railway line to Ryazan and developed a mix of housing and industry. It is home to an aircraft plant associated with MiG, and it is also known across Russia for its cucumbers.
