Lūnāvāda lies in eastern Gujarat and is the headquarters of Mahisagar district, named after the Mahi River that flows through the region. The town sits on gently undulating land with low hills and farmland around it. From above, its dense older centre stands out, with newer neighbourhoods and roads spreading outwards from the core.
Lūnāvāda was the capital of a princely state of the same name until Indian independence, and its older streets still show the layout of a small royal town, with a palace and closely packed lanes in the centre. Lakes and ponds in and around the town add open shapes among the buildings.
