Lyskovo stands on the right bank of the Volga in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, downstream from Nizhny Novgorod. Across the river stands the Makaryev Monastery. For a long time the great Makaryev fair was held nearby, and it made this stretch of the Volga one of Russia's major trading places until the fair moved to Nizhny Novgorod in the nineteenth century.
The Volga dominates the map, a wide band of water with sandbars and a flat floodplain on the opposite side. The town lies along the higher ground of the right bank. Its streets are organised into fairly regular blocks, with older lanes near the river and a merchant-era centre around the main churches.
