Mabai lies in southeastern Yunnan, in Wenshan prefecture, a hilly area of limestone country near the border with Vietnam. From above, the town fills a valley floor, with streets arranged along the flatter ground and roads leaving through gaps in the surrounding hills. Fields and terraces surround the built-up area, and forested slopes rise beyond them.
Mabai is the seat of Maguan County, and it serves as a market and administrative centre for the surrounding villages, many of them home to Zhuang, Miao and other ethnic minority communities. Roads connect it to Wenshan city to the north and to border crossings toward Vietnam to the south.
