Madukkūr lies in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, in the southern part of the Cauvery delta, not far from Pattukkottai. This is some of the flattest and most intensively farmed land in South India, and from above the town appears as a compact cluster of streets surrounded by rice fields in every direction.
The delta is defined by water. A network of branch rivers and irrigation channels, many of them maintained and extended over centuries, spreads across the plain and divides the land into countless small plots. Roads often follow these watercourses, running along their banks between villages and market towns.
