Mahbūbnagar lies on the Deccan plateau in southern Telangana, in a landscape of granite outcrops, dry fields and irrigation tanks. From above, the town forms a compact core with roads leading out toward Hyderabad and other district centres, while patches of water and rocky ground break up the edges. The railway line running through it adds a long straight stroke to the map.
The town was once known as Palamuru and was renamed in the late nineteenth century in honour of Mir Mahbub Ali Khan, the Nizam of Hyderabad. On its outskirts stands Pillalamarri, a banyan tree several centuries old whose branches have spread across a very large area, making it one of the best-known natural landmarks in Telangana.
