Malakhovka is a settlement in Moscow Oblast, south-east of the capital, and grew up as a dacha community along the Kazan railway line. On a map the railway cuts diagonally through the area, with a station at its centre. Around it spreads a loose pattern of quiet lanes and large wooded plots, and a lake gives the eye somewhere to rest.
For more than a century the settlement has been a summer destination for Muscovites. Its summer theatre drew well-known performers in the early twentieth century, and today the town hosts a state academy of physical culture. The map still carries that holiday-suburb feel: generous plots, few straight axes and plenty of green between houses.
