Maple Grove is a suburb northwest of Minneapolis, in Hennepin County. On a map its most striking feature is the knot of highways on its southeast side, where I-94, I-494 and I-694 meet. Beyond it, residential neighbourhoods spread out in the curving cul-de-sac patterns of late twentieth-century suburbs, broken up by lakes, ponds and wetlands.
The town centre was built on land that was mined for gravel for decades. The Arbor Lakes development turned the old pits into ponds surrounded by shops, homes and walking paths. To the north, the large Elm Creek Park Reserve preserves woodland, prairie and trails that extend into neighbouring communities.
