Marrero lies on the West Bank of the Mississippi River in Jefferson Parish, across the water from New Orleans. Like much of the region, it is organised by the river: streets begin near the levee and run inland in long parallel lines, cut across by the Westbank Expressway and a network of drainage canals that keep the low ground dry.
The community takes its name from Louis H. Marrero, a local landowner and politician of the early twentieth century. Its layout echoes the long-lot pattern common along the lower Mississippi, with narrow strips of land stretching back from the water. South of the built-up area, the grid runs out into swamp and marsh.
