Matiri is in the Ruvuma region of southern Tanzania, in the highland country east of Lake Nyasa. This is hilly terrain, and on a map the land's shape determines almost everything. Roads follow ridgelines and contours rather than straight lines, and homes and farm plots spread along them, so the settlement takes on a branching, organic form.
The surrounding highlands are farmed intensively, with small fields and tree crops dividing the slopes into an irregular mosaic. Streams run down the valleys between the ridges, drawing thin lines that feed into larger rivers downstream. A few main routes connect the area with the district centres of Ruvuma, and footpaths link the many scattered homesteads.
