Meerut lies on the level land of the Ganges–Yamuna Doab, about seventy kilometres north-east of Delhi. From above the city splits into two distinct textures: the dense, irregular lanes of the old city, and to the north the large cantonment, with its long straight roads, open grounds and generous spacing. Few Indian cities show the colonial-era split between old town and garrison as clearly.
The cantonment has a particular place in history. On 10 May 1857, sepoys stationed there rose against the East India Company, the start of the uprising many call India's First War of Independence. Today Meerut is also known for making sports goods, especially cricket equipment, which is sold across the country.
