Modiin Ilit is a planned city built from the 1990s onward on hills just east of Modiin. Because it follows the terrain, its map is made of looping roads that trace the contours of each ridge, with dense rows of apartment blocks stepping along them. Separate neighbourhoods sit on separate hilltops, divided by valleys that remain largely open.
The city has a predominantly ultra-Orthodox population and is known for its young residents and large families, which has made it one of the faster-growing localities in the region. It lies across the Green Line in the West Bank, a short distance from Modiin and the central coastal plain.
A Modiin Ilit map poster is essentially a drawing of topography through streets. Without contour lines, the curves of the roads still show where the ground rises and falls, and the empty valleys between neighbourhoods give the composition space to breathe.
