Mongaguá stretches along the southern coast of São Paulo state, and from above it is almost entirely horizontal. The town forms a thin band parallel to the sea, pressed between a long, open beach and the forested lowlands and mountains of the Serra do Mar behind it. Short blocks run back from the shore, repeated for kilometres along the coast.
A coastal highway runs through the town parallel to the beach, acting as a spine that ties the neighbourhoods together. Small rivers come down from the hills and cross the strip to reach the ocean, breaking the grid at intervals. The town is part of the Baixada Santista region and is a popular beach resort for families from the São Paulo metropolitan area.
