Mössingen lies in the district of Tübingen in Baden-Württemberg, at the foot of the Albtrauf, the steep north-western edge of the Swabian Jura. The town brings together several former villages, including Öschingen, Talheim and Belsen, and from above it looks like a cluster of connected settlements spread across the valley, with forested slopes rising sharply behind them.
In 1983 a large landslide on the Hirschkopf above the town reshaped part of the escarpment. The area is now a nature reserve, and the scar is still visible in the landscape. The town is also remembered for the Mössingen general strike of January 1933, when workers walked out in protest against Hitler's appointment as chancellor. It was one of the few such strikes to actually take place in Germany at that time.
