Muara Teweh is the capital of North Barito Regency in Central Kalimantan, on the Indonesian part of Borneo. It lies on the Barito River, one of the island's great waterways, and the river is the single most important feature of the map: a wide, curving band that the town follows along its bank.
As in many river towns in Kalimantan, the Barito long served as the main route for people and goods, connecting inland communities with the coast far downstream. The town's name refers to a river mouth, pointing to the meeting of waters that made the site important in the first place.
