Mutengene grew up at a road junction in Cameroon's South-West Region. Its shape follows the highways: the main road toward Douala, the route south to Limbe and the coast, and the road up the slopes to Buea. From above, the town spreads out along these routes, with denser streets gathered where they meet.
The land rises to the north toward Mount Cameroon, the highest peak in West and Central Africa, and the landscape around the town is green, with farms and plantations between the settlements. Because traffic heading to the coast and the mountain passes through here, markets and roadside businesses line its main streets.
