Nada is the urban centre of Danzhou, a large municipality on the northwestern side of Hainan Island. Seen from above, the town sits inland on gently rolling land, with the Gulf of Tonkin coast some distance to the west. The streets form a loose grid around a central district, and around them the map turns into a mosaic of fields, water bodies and plantation land.
Danzhou has a long literary association: the Song dynasty poet Su Shi spent part of his exile in this area, and his memory is still honoured locally.
