Namangan lies on the northern side of the Fergana Valley in eastern Uzbekistan. From above, the city spreads across gently sloping land, with streets running between courtyards, gardens and canals that draw water from the surrounding rivers. Farmland and orchards surround the urban area on most sides.
Not far to the south, the Naryn and Kara Darya rivers meet to form the Syr Darya, one of Central Asia's great rivers. Namangan is known for its gardens and for an annual flower festival, and older buildings such as the Mulla Kyrgyz madrasa recall its history as a trading town.
