Nantucket lies about thirty miles south of Cape Cod, and its shape reads almost like a crescent. A broad, low body of moorland and ponds sits to the south. To the north, long, thin sandbars curl around the harbour: Coatue with its row of scooped bays, and the slender spit running up to Great Point and its lighthouse.
Nantucket town sits where the harbour meets the land, with a compact grid of lanes leading up from the wharves. Main Street keeps its cobblestones and the large houses built during the island's whaling years, when Nantucket was one of the leading whaling ports in the world. Brant Point lighthouse marks the harbour entrance.
