New Britain sits in central Connecticut, a little southwest of Hartford. Its map is tightly packed: long residential streets, blocks of former factory buildings, rail lines and a downtown where several main roads meet. Route 9 cuts through the city on an elevated line, and the old street pattern fits around it.
The city's nickname is the Hardware City. For generations it was a centre of tool and hardware manufacturing, and Stanley, now Stanley Black & Decker, is still based here.
