Newcastle upon Tyne rises steeply from the north bank of its river, and the map captures that relationship in a single glance. Here the Tyne runs through a deep valley, and within a short stretch it is crossed by a series of bridges, from the Tyne Bridge and the double-deck High Level Bridge to the tilting Gateshead Millennium Bridge.
