Newtownards sits at the northern tip of Strangford Lough in County Down, Northern Ireland. The long sea lough stretches south from the edge of town, and on a map its shoreline and mudflats give the composition a strong, open lower edge. The town centre is a compact grid of streets around a central square.
Above the town, Scrabo Hill carries Scrabo Tower, a nineteenth-century memorial that has become a landmark visible across the area. The town has a long market tradition, and its old market house stands on the main square. The grand house and gardens of Mount Stewart lie a short drive away along the lough shore.
