Nguigmi is a town in the Diffa region in the far east of Niger, near the northern end of the Lake Chad basin. It once stood close to the lake's shore. As Lake Chad has shrunk dramatically since the 1960s, the water has pulled far back, and today the town is surrounded by dry former lakebed, dunes and Sahelian scrub.
