Niederkrüchten is a municipality in the district of Viersen, in North Rhine-Westphalia, directly on the border with the Netherlands, near Roermond. It is made up of several villages, the largest being Niederkrüchten and Elmpt, surrounded by farmland, woods and heath. The small Schwalm river flows through the area.
On a map one feature stands out. Just outside Elmpt are the extensive grounds of the former RAF Brüggen, a British air base that operated for decades during and after the Cold War. Its long runway and taxiways form a large geometric figure within the forest. To the west, the border runs through woodland that includes part of the cross-border Meinweg area.
