Niksar lies in Tokat Province in northern Anatolia, where the Kelkit River crosses a broad, fertile valley. The town climbs from the plain up the slopes, and its map shows this clearly. Newer, more regular streets fill the flat ground below, and a tighter, more irregular old quarter rises toward the castle on the hill above.
Niksar is the ancient Neocaesarea, an important city in the Roman and Byzantine world and the seat of the third-century bishop Gregory Thaumaturgus. In the twelfth century it served as one of the early capitals of the Danishmendid dynasty. Buildings from that period, including mosques and tombs, still stand in the old town.
