Ningdong lies in Ningxia, east of the Yellow River and within reach of the regional capital, Yinchuan. It is known mainly as the site of a large energy and chemical industry base. That base was built around the area's coal reserves, and the town grew up to serve it. It is a recent place, and it looks like one.
From above, Ningdong is a composition of very large rectangles. There are industrial compounds, storage yards and residential districts, and broad roads run between them.
