Nirmāli lies in Supaul district in north Bihar, close to the Kosi, one of the most restless rivers in South Asia. The Kosi carries vast amounts of sediment down from the Himalaya and has shifted its course many times over the centuries. Across this part of the plain, long embankments have been built to contain it, and they appear on maps as straight, deliberate lines.
The town itself is compact, with a centre of lanes around its main roads and a rail line connecting it to the wider region.
