Normal Map Poster & Print
Normal, Illinois, takes its name from a teacher-training school. Illinois State University was founded here in 1857 as a normal school, and the town grew around it. On the map, the campus is still at the heart of the town: a large area of quads, paths and buildings that breaks the surrounding street grid just north of Uptown Normal.
Normal and Bloomington are so closely connected that their streets form one continuous urban area on the flat Illinois prairie. The grid is almost uniform, with long straight roads, rail lines crossing diagonally and the Constitution Trail following former railway routes. Uptown is organised around a circular roundabout plaza, one of the few curves in an otherwise rectangular plan.

The railway lines cut through the grid at an angle, and the edges of the town gradually give way to straight farm roads and fields that seem to continue beyond the frame.
