Nowshera lies on the Kabul River in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, roughly midway between Peshawar and the Indus crossing at Attock. The river is the main feature of the map. It runs broad and braided across the landscape, with the town spread along its banks. Bridges tie the two sides together, and the floodplain leaves wide open bands where no streets can go.
The town is also a long-established military station. The cantonment's planned layout, with straight roads, large compounds and generous open grounds, looks very different from the tighter, more organic civilian quarters nearby.
