Obala lies in the Centre region of Cameroon, north of the capital Yaoundé, and serves as the administrative seat of the Lekié department. The surrounding country is made up of rolling uplands, forest patches and cultivated plots, and on the map the town appears as a cluster of streets gathered where the main roads meet.
