Oildale Map Poster & Print
Oildale sits just north of Bakersfield in California's southern San Joaquin Valley, across the Kern River from the city. It is an unincorporated community whose name makes its history clear: it grew beside the Kern River Oil Field, where oil was discovered at the end of the 1890s and which is still producing today.
From above, Oildale is a compact grid of residential streets bounded by the river on the south and by the open oilfield hills to the north and east. Beyond the last houses, the map fills with the fine web of lease roads and well pads, a scratched texture quite unlike a normal suburb or farmland.
An Oildale map poster brings together three kinds of line: the river curving along the valley floor, the regular grid of homes, and the dense tracery of oilfield roads. The country singer Merle Haggard grew up here, and the town remains strongly associated with the Bakersfield sound, which gives the map a certain cultural weight.

Oilfield tracery
North and east of the houses, lease roads and well pads cover the hills in a fine, scratchy web, the visible footprint of more than a century of oil production.
Compact grid
Residential streets form a tight, regular grid between the river and the oilfield, a clear block of town set against the open valley and the drier hills.
