Olkusz lies in Lesser Poland, northwest of Kraków, on the Silesian-Kraków upland. The medieval town at its heart is easy to spot on the map. A rectangular market square sits at the centre of a compact grid laid out in the Middle Ages, and the curve of its former walls still shows in the streets around it. Later districts spread out from there.
The town grew rich on silver and lead mining, which shaped the land for centuries. The surrounding landscape is a mix of forest, small fields and former industrial sites. The small Baba River runs past the town. A little to the north lies the Błędów Desert, an unusual stretch of open sand that stands out on the map as a pale gap in the forest.
