Oran is Algeria's second-largest city, set on a wide bay on the Mediterranean. Relief shapes its map. The city climbs from the harbour onto a plateau, and to the west the Murdjadjo mountain rises sharply, topped by the Santa Cruz fort and chapel. The harbour below is long and built out into the sea along the waterfront.
Above the port runs the Front de Mer, a promenade boulevard on a terrace overlooking the harbour. The old quarter of Sidi El Houari has winding streets, while the central city has more regular avenues and squares from the colonial period. Ring roads circle the growing suburbs toward the east and south.
