Ŏrang lies in North Hamgyong Province, in the far northeast of North Korea, close to the coast of the East Sea. Like many towns in this region, it sits where mountain valleys widen into a narrow coastal strip. The map shows a compact settlement framed by steep terrain inland, with open water not far away.
Reliable detail about Ŏrang is limited, and much of what is known comes from maps and satellite imagery rather than first-hand accounts. Those sources show a modest town of roads, blocks and farmland, linked by road and rail to the larger cities along the coast of North Hamgyong.
