Oxford lies in the south-west corner of Ohio, close to the Indiana border and north-west of Cincinnati. Its map is shaped by the campus of Miami University, founded in 1809 and one of the oldest public universities in the United States. Campus lawns, paths and large building footprints take up a considerable share of the town, right beside the small commercial centre.
The commercial core, known as Uptown, is a short grid of streets lined with shops and restaurants closely tied to student life. Around it, residential streets extend in a mostly regular pattern, and beyond them the country opens into farmland, creeks and woods, with Hueston Woods State Park and its lake a short drive to the north.
