Pagan is in the Northern Mariana Islands in the western Pacific. Its outline is distinctive. A larger volcanic body in the north and a smaller one in the south are connected by a thin neck of land. There are no towns and there is almost no road network, so the silhouette is the whole map.
Mount Pagan in the northern part of the island is an active volcano. A major eruption in 1981 led to the evacuation of the island's residents, and Pagan has had no permanent population for most of the time since. Its future use has been discussed for years, but it remains remote and largely empty.
