Paharpur is a town in Dera Ismail Khan District in the south of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on the broad plain that lies on the western side of the Indus River. From above it appears as a compact settlement in open country, with the river valley to the east and drier land rising gradually toward the hills in the west.
Much of the surrounding land is farmed with the help of canal irrigation, and on the map these channels and the roads beside them run in long, straight lines across the plain. The town's own streets are more closely packed, with main roads leading out toward Dera Ismail Khan and other nearby towns.
