Pallasovka lies in the east of Volgograd Oblast, in the flat, dry steppe between the Volga and the Kazakhstan border. On a map the town is built on a regular grid of long, straight streets, the kind of plan common to settlements shaped by the railway. The town is named after Peter Simon Pallas, the 18th-century naturalist who explored the lower Volga steppes.
