Palmeirândia lies in the Baixada Maranhense, a vast lowland region in northern Maranhão, west of São Luís. From above, the town forms a small, loosely regular grid of streets around a central area, with roads leading out across flat land. What surrounds it matters more to the map: wetlands, seasonal lakes and fields that are partly underwater for much of the rainy season.
The Baixada is one of Brazil's great wetland landscapes, and the rhythm of life here follows the seasons of flood and drought. When the water rises, fields become lakes and some routes are best travelled by boat. In the dry season the same land becomes pasture. The name Palmeirândia refers to the palm trees that are common in this part of Maranhão.
