Palwancha, also spelled Paloncha, lies in Bhadradri Kothagudem district in eastern Telangana. This is wooded, hilly country near the Godavari basin, very different from the open plateau further west. On a map, the town is an irregular group of streets around a main road, with separate planned areas for industry and staff housing.
The best-known site is the Kothagudem Thermal Power Station, which gives the area its industrial character. Its compound, cooling structures and staff colonies appear as large planned blocks next to the organic streets of the older town. There are also other industrial units nearby, and the coal mining region around Kothagudem is close.
