Parola lies in the Jalgaon district of northern Maharashtra, in the farming country of the Khandesh region. Its best-known feature is the fort at the heart of the town. This is a squarish stronghold surrounded by a moat, and it remains legible on the map as a compact geometric shape among the surrounding lanes.
The fort dates from the eighteenth century and is traditionally associated with the family of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi. The old town packs closely around it in narrow, winding streets. Newer areas extend along the main roads leading out towards neighbouring towns and the cotton and grain fields of Khandesh.
