Pastavy is in the Vitebsk region of northwestern Belarus, in a lake-filled landscape near the Lithuanian border. The town sits on the Myadzelka River. From above, the historic centre is compact, with streets meeting around the central square. The river widens into a body of water beside the town and gives the plan a soft, open edge.
Pastavy's best-known landmark is the former Tyzenhaus palace and its park. It dates from the eighteenth century, when the Tyzenhaus family developed the town.
