The Passaic River defines Paterson. It swings around much of the city in a wide loop before heading south. At the Great Falls the river drops over a basalt ledge into a narrow chasm, and that drop is the reason the city was founded. On a map the falls sit close to downtown, with raceways and old mill blocks gathered around them.
In 1791 the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures, backed by Alexander Hamilton, chose this site for a planned industrial town powered by water. Paterson later became known as Silk City for its textile mills. Beyond the historic core, the grid runs in several directions at once, bent by the river and by Garret Mountain to the southwest.
