Patos lies in the interior of Paraíba, in the semi-arid sertão, with caatinga scrub surrounding the city on every side. It is one of the main urban centres of the state's interior. For a wide rural region it serves as a hub for trade and services, drawing people from smaller towns for shopping, schooling and health care.
On the map, the city spreads over fairly level ground. A central grid of blocks sits around the old commercial streets, and newer neighbourhoods reach outward along the main roads.
