Petrolina lies on the left bank of the São Francisco River in the far west of Pernambuco, directly across the water from Juazeiro in Bahia. On a map the two cities form a mirrored pair, joined by the Presidente Dutra Bridge, with the broad river and its islands running between them. Petrolina's centre follows a regular grid that begins at the riverbank.
Away from the river the grid extends into wide avenues and newer residential districts laid out across flat ground. Beyond the built-up area, the map changes character: straight irrigation canals and rectangular plots stretch across the semi-arid land.
