Piancó lies in the interior of Paraíba, in the semi-arid sertão of northeastern Brazil. The town sits beside the river that shares its name, and its streets form a compact network around a central square and church before quickly giving way to open countryside.
The Piancó River is seasonal in character, and the land around it is marked by dry-season scrub, small reservoirs and farm tracks. From above, the river's course and the scattered ponds are the main natural shapes, framing the town on a broad, gently rolling plain.
