Pio XII is a small municipality in the interior of Maranhão, in northeastern Brazil. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets set in a wide, low landscape of pasture, palm groves and farmland. Roads run out from the urban area and quickly thin into tracks between fields.
The town is named after Pope Pius XII, which is unusual among Brazilian place names. Its urban core is modest and fairly regular, with blocks arranged around a few main streets and the local church. Past the edges, the map turns sparse, with small streams and field boundaries doing most of the drawing.
