Pirapemas is a municipality in northern Maranhão, inland from São Luís in a region of low relief, rivers and farmland. The town's urban area is modest, and its small network of streets forms a clear centre on the map. Around it the land is open, crossed by roads that lead to neighbouring municipalities and the state's main highways.
The land here is gentle, so the street pattern owes more to history than to hills. There are a few straight main streets, blocks added as the town grew, and looser building at the edges. Northern Maranhão is known for its babaçu palm stands and small-scale farming, and the thin rural roads on the map lead out into that working landscape.
