Pittsburg is in Crawford County, in the corner of southeast Kansas once known for coal mining. Its layout follows the prairie model. A regular grid of streets runs north–south and east–west, a main commercial avenue crosses downtown, and railway lines cut across the grid at an angle. These are clear remnants of a town that grew quickly around mining and rail.
On the south side, the campus of Pittsburg State University occupies a wide section of the grid, with open lawns and larger buildings.
