Pizarro is the main town of the Bajo Baudó municipality in the department of Chocó, on the Pacific coast of Colombia. It lies near the mouth of the Baudó river, in one of the wettest regions in the world. On a map, water dominates: river channels, estuaries and the ocean surround a small built-up area.
The town is compact, with streets and houses close to the riverbank, and much of daily life depends on boats instead of roads. Around it the land breaks into mangrove, low forest and winding tidal channels, which form a complex, branching pattern leading out to the sea.
